Getting an Animal Health Certificate in Cornwall

An Animal Health Certificate records the identification and rabies details required for eligible pet travel from Great Britain to the EU or Northern Ireland. It must be completed and signed by an Official Veterinarian after the relevant requirements have been met.

The AHC must be issued within 10 days before your pet enters the EU. Rabies vaccination must be valid before certification, including the required 21-day waiting period after a primary vaccination or an interrupted course. Tell us the date your pet will actually enter the EU.

Dogs travelling to Ireland, Finland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland may also need veterinary tapeworm treatment within the required 24–120 hour window. Contact us before booking if your itinerary involves a non-EU country or other unusual arrangements.

Check the current GOV.UK pet travel guidance.

Your pet will usually need:

  • A readable microchip

  • A valid rabies vaccination

  • Rabies vaccination given after microchip placement

  • Proof of microchip date

  • Proof of rabies vaccination history

  • Travel details, including your EU entry country and planned travel date

  • An AHC appointment within the correct travel window

Your Animal Health Certificate is valid for entry into the EU for 10 days after it is issued. Once you have entered the EU, it can also be used for onward travel within the EU and for re-entry to Great Britain, provided it remains within the permitted validity period.

How our Cornwall AHC service works

1. Book your appointment online

Enter your postcode and choose an available home visit or Camel Trail collection appointment. Select a date within the correct window before your pet enters the EU.

2. Send your pet’s supporting documents

Upload the microchip details, rabies vaccination history and travel information so we can check them before the appointment.

3. We review and prepare the certificate

We review the records and prepare the AHC in advance. If anything needs clarification, we will tell you what is required.

4. Meet your Official Veterinarian

Your Official Veterinarian visits your covered home address or meets you at Camel Trail Car Park. They scan each pet’s microchip, check the original records and complete the certificate when the requirements are met.

5. Travel with the completed paperwork

Keep the issued certificate and supporting records with you and make sure EU entry takes place within the certificate’s validity window.

Your appointment checklist

  • Check the appointment address and time in your confirmation.
  • Complete the requested owner and pet details, and send the supporting documents before the appointment.
  • Let us know if your travel dates, route or pet’s records have changed since booking.
  • Bring every pet included on the certificate and the original records requested by the team.

After certification, keep the issued paperwork and supporting documents accessible for the journey. Read the destination guide for your route, and contact the team if your plans change.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Animal Health Certificate and when do I need one?

An Animal Health Certificate is the document most pet owners travelling from Great Britain to the EU or Northern Ireland need when their pet does not have a valid qualifying pet passport. It records the microchip, rabies vaccination and journey details and must be issued by an Official Veterinarian.

How soon before travel should I book my Cornwall AHC?

The certificate must be issued within 10 days before EU entry. Book early enough for us to review the microchip and rabies evidence, particularly if you are travelling at short notice or the vaccination history is complicated.

Where is the Cornwall collection point?

£99 collection-point AHC appointments are held at Camel Trail Car Park, Bodmin, PL31 2RD. The exact meeting point is ///bulldozer.remember.flow. Appointments must be booked in advance. Bring every travelling pet and the original supporting records requested during your document review.

Can I book a home visit elsewhere in Cornwall?

Yes. Home-visit AHCs start from £129 within the local covered area, subject to availability. Enter your postcode to see your options and any travel fee. Alternatively, our £99 Camel Trail Car Park, Bodmin collection-point appointment is available for one pet, or £119 for two.

How long after a rabies vaccination can my pet travel?

After a primary rabies vaccination, or where continuity has lapsed, 21 full days must pass before EU entry. A valid booster given before the previous vaccination expires normally maintains continuity without a new waiting period.

Does my dog need tapeworm treatment?

Dogs travelling to Ireland, Finland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland generally need veterinary tapeworm treatment recorded within the required 24–120 hour window before arrival. Requirements can vary with the exact route, so confirm the itinerary when booking.

How much does an AHC cost in Cornwall?

A standard one-pet Animal Health Certificate costs £99 at our Camel Trail Car Park, Bodmin collection point, or £119 for two pets. Home-visit AHCs start from £129 within the covered local area. Extra pets, urgent bookings and treatments are priced during booking; any applicable home-visit travel fee is shown before payment. Eligible repeat AHCs remain £119.

Can you help with Export Health Certificates from Cornwall?

We can assist with many pet export journeys beyond the EU. Export requirements depend on the destination country, timing, tests and treatments required. Pet Export Health Certificate services start from £299; contact us with your destination and intended travel date so we can confirm availability and requirements.
