Can GB Residents Still Use an EU Pet Passport in 2026?

For GB residents, the position on EU pet passports changed on 22 April 2026.

The key change

Government guidance says EU pet passports may now only be issued to people whose main home is in the EU and should not be used by GB residents for entry into the EU from Great Britain. This can include passports issued to GB residents before the rule change.

What should GB residents use?

For a normal non-commercial journey from Great Britain to an EU country, the safest route is to obtain a new Animal Health Certificate for each trip unless another valid document clearly applies.

What about coming back to Great Britain?

The April 2026 announcement says GB residents can still use qualifying EU pet passports for the return journey to Great Britain.
