Planning Pet Travel from Newcastle: AHC Timing, Rabies Records and Appointments
Travelling with a pet involves a few fixed veterinary rules, but the process is much easier when the dates and documents are checked early. Here is what Newcastle pet owners should consider before booking an Animal Health Certificate.
Work backwards from your EU entry date
The Animal Health Certificate must normally be issued no more than 10 days before your first entry into the EU. If you are driving to France, for example, use the date you expect to cross the border or arrive at the port as the key date for your appointment.
The certificate can then support onward travel within the EU for up to four months, provided the pet's rabies vaccination remains valid. It is designed for one journey from Great Britain, so a new certificate is usually required for a later trip.
Check the microchip and rabies sequence
Your pet must be microchipped, and the rabies vaccination must have been given after the microchip was implanted or read. The vaccination record needs to show the vaccination date, product details, batch information and the veterinary surgeon's signature or practice details.
A first rabies vaccination, or a vaccination given after the previous one expired, normally requires a 21-day wait before travel. A booster given before the previous vaccination expires may avoid a new waiting period, provided the record clearly proves continuous cover.
Allow for tapeworm treatment where required
Dogs travelling to Ireland, Finland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland need tapeworm treatment from a veterinary surgeon within the required time window before arrival. The product, date, time and veterinary endorsement must be recorded correctly.
Choose the appointment that suits you
Newcastle home visits are available within 15 miles, with extended travel available for an additional fee. Alternatively, book the Heaton collection point at Sainsbury's Heaton, Etherstone Avenue, NE7 7JW. The what3words reference is ///noises.pilots.flops.
Send documents before you travel
An advance check of the rabies and microchip record can prevent avoidable problems at the appointment. It also gives you time to contact the vaccinating practice if a record needs clarification.
Bring the original vaccination evidence and the travelling pet to the appointment. Make sure the person named on the certificate is the owner or authorised person who will travel with the pet.
