Taking a Dog to Ireland From Great Britain in 2026: AHC & Tapeworm Rules
Travelling from Great Britain to the Republic of Ireland with a dog involves the usual EU pet travel requirements plus one important extra step: tapeworm treatment.
Do I need an Animal Health Certificate for Ireland?
For most dogs travelling from Great Britain to the Republic of Ireland, an Animal Health Certificate is required. It must be issued by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days before your dog enters the EU.
Your dog must also be microchipped and have a valid rabies vaccination. After a first rabies vaccination, you must normally wait at least 21 full days before travel.
The tapeworm rule for dogs entering Ireland
Dogs entering Ireland must normally receive an approved tapeworm treatment containing praziquantel or an equivalent effective substance. The treatment must be given by a veterinarian no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before arrival.
The veterinarian must record the treatment correctly in the relevant section of your pet travel document, including the date and time it was administered.
Why timing matters
The 24–120 hour window is based on your arrival time in Ireland, not the time you leave home. If you are taking a ferry, calculate the treatment window using your expected arrival time.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Have your dog’s microchip details, original rabies vaccination evidence, travel date and first EU country of entry ready. Sending clear documentation in advance makes it much easier for the Official Veterinarian to prepare your certificate correctly.
