Travelling Separately from Your Pet? The 5-Day Rule Explained

Updated: 6 days ago

A pet can travel with an authorised person rather than the owner, but the timing between the owner's journey and the pet's journey matters.

The 5-day rule

Government carrier guidance describes non-commercial pet travel as a journey where the pet travels because the owner is travelling and the pet travels at the same time as, or within 5 days of, the owner or an authorised person.

Why we ask who is travelling

If someone other than the owner will travel with the pet, we collect consignee details and written authorisation as part of the case preparation.

Outside the 5-day window?

The movement may fall outside the normal non-commercial pet travel route and different export paperwork can apply. Contact us before booking if the owner and pet will travel more than 5 days apart.

You can check availability and book online at https://www.thepetpassportco.co.uk/custom-booking-form.
