Getting an Animal Health Certificate in Edinburgh

 

If you are travelling from Edinburgh or elsewhere in Scotland to the EU with your dog or cat, you will usually need an Animal Health Certificate, also known as an AHC.

An AHC is required for most dogs, cats and ferrets travelling from Great Britain to the EU. It must be issued by an Official Veterinarian and must be completed within the correct travel window before your pet enters the EU.

Your pet will usually need:

• A readable microchip

• A valid rabies vaccination

• Rabies vaccination given after microchip placement

• Proof of microchip date

• Proof of rabies vaccination history

• Travel details, including your EU entry country and planned travel date

• An AHC appointment within the correct travel window

Your Animal Health Certificate is valid for entry into the EU for 10 days after it is issued. Once you have entered the EU, it can also be used for onward travel within the EU and for re-entry to Great Britain, provided it remains within the permitted validity period.

An AHC is generally issued for a specific trip from Great Britain to the EU. GB residents travelling from Great Britain to the EU should normally arrange a new Animal Health Certificate for each trip.

Do I need an AHC if I have an EU pet passport?

GB residents travelling from Great Britain to the EU should usually get an Animal Health Certificate, even if they have previously used an EU pet passport. If you are unsure which document applies to your pet, contact us before booking and we can advise based on your travel plans.

Can you help with urgent travel?

Where availability allows, yes. We offer urgent Animal Health Certificate appointments for owners travelling at short notice.

Can you issue AHCs for more than one pet?

Yes. We can issue Animal Health Certificates for multiple pets travelling with the same owner, provided the travel details and documentation are suitable.

Do dogs need tapeworm treatment for Ireland?

Dogs travelling to Ireland, Northern Ireland, Finland, Malta or Norway usually need tapeworm treatment before entry. This must be given by a vet within the correct time window before arrival.
