Newcastle to Bergen Ferry Plans and Pet Travel to Norway: What We Know So Far

The idea of a direct passenger ferry between the North East of England and Norway is attracting attention again, and for pet owners it would be an especially interesting route.

Is Newcastle to Bergen actually returning?

Not yet. Reporting in 2026 says Newcastle City Council has been exploring ways to revive a link with Bergen, but there is currently no confirmed operator selling tickets, no published timetable and no announced vessel for a revived route.

Why pet owners are interested

A direct overnight sailing could remove a large amount of driving for travellers from northern England and Scotland who currently reach Norway by sailing to continental Europe and continuing north by road and ferry. The route would also suit people travelling with cars, campervans and dogs.

What the survey showed

Maritimt Magasin reported on Ferrygogo's 2026 survey of 197 ferry-interested travellers. In that survey, 56.9% selected a UK-Norway route such as Newcastle-Bergen or Newcastle-Stavanger as the direct route they would most like to see return. That is an interesting demand signal, but it is not evidence that a new service is confirmed.

Pet travel rules would still apply

A direct ferry would simplify the geography, not remove veterinary entry requirements. Dogs travelling to Norway normally need tapeworm treatment within the required 24-to-120-hour window before arrival, as well as the correct pet travel documentation.
