Dogs travelling to certain destinations need an approved treatment against Echinococcus multilocularis before arrival. The timing matters just as much as the product, so this is one part of pet travel that should be planned around the actual arrival time.

Which destinations require tapeworm treatment?

For relevant journeys, dogs travelling to Ireland, Finland, Malta, Norway and Northern Ireland require the treatment to be given and correctly recorded within the permitted window before arrival.

What is the 24 to 120 hour rule?

The treatment must be administered by a veterinarian no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before the dog arrives at the destination. That is a five-day window, but the safest way to plan it is from your expected arrival time rather than simply counting calendar dates.

What treatment is needed?

The product must contain praziquantel or another active ingredient proven effective against Echinococcus multilocularis. Your veterinarian must record the product, date, time and other required details in the relevant pet travel document.

Can the treatment be given at the AHC appointment?

Often yes, provided the appointment falls inside the correct 24 to 120 hour window. If it does not, a separate treatment appointment may be needed.

Need an AHC and tapeworm treatment?

The Pet Passport Co. can help you plan the paperwork and treatment timing around your journey. Animal Health Certificates start from £129, with repeat AHCs from £119.
